Vancouver Police Department Urban Renewal Project

The Downtown Eastside (DTES) of Vancouver, British Columbia, once a thriving business district in the heart of the city, is a historic neighbourhood that is home to over 16,000 persons.

Unfortunately a serious public health and public order crisis has overwhelmed the lives of many who live in DTES. The deleterious effects of the high incidence of mental illness, drug addiction, disease, crime, homelessness and poverty have decimated the most vulnerable people in the community.

The Downtown Eastside Revitalization Program is a multi-faceted approach to restoring the area to a healthy, safe and liveable neighbourhood for all. Our efforts are focused on developing and implementing long-term approaches to community health, community safety, housing, and economic development.

For other cities and towns contemplating an urban renewal project, the material and insights provided may assist with your intelligence gathering efforts to accomplish this goal.
