Insurgents storm police station in western Iraq city of Ramadi; at least 21 dead

Insurgents stormed the western Iraq city of Ramadi on Sunday and tried to blast their way into a police compound, setting off a fierce gun battle with local security forces. Eight police officers and seven insurgents were killed, according to government and security officials.

“It was a bold attack, surprising attack,” said Brig. Gen. Khamis Jasem, a commander at a provincial operations center. “They made the security forces busy with explosives here and there. Then they attacked.”

Suicide bomb attacks have killed thousands in Iraq since 2006. Use the interactive to view the human toll up to today.

An additional six civilians were killed in the bombings and attacks, said Maj. Mahmoud Khaleel of the Anbar provincial police. Security officials have increased their readiness, particularly in the nearby city of Fallujah. “We are expecting similar attacks in the coming days,” Jasem added.

Sunday’s assault, in a predominantly Sunni area, followed a huge blast Saturday outside the southern city of Basra, which killed at least 53 Shiite pilgrims on a march to a religious shrine. The country is increasingly on edge after previous bombings in the wake of the U.S. troop withdrawal last month.

Officials fear that insurgents are trying to provoke a sectarian war between Sunni and Shiite extremists, in part by taking advantage of a political crisis in Baghdad that has paralyzed the government.

Chechen Bombers Had Tickets To Moscow

The authorities have shot dead five insurgents — two of whom may have been planning a terrorist act in Moscow and one of whom was wanted on suspicion of organizing a failed assassination attempt on Ingushetia’s leader, officials said Saturday.

Police near Chechnya’s second-largest city, Gudermes, tried to arrest two men they suspected to be rebel fighters on Friday night, but the men resisted detention and were shot dead, the Chechen Interior Ministry said.

The suspected insurgents were found with explosives strapped to them, and were carrying hand grenades and train tickets to Moscow, the ministry said in a statement.

Police were investigating whether an act of terrorism was planned for the train or for somewhere in Moscow, or whether the suspected rebels had accomplices.

Ansar al-Islam leader arrested in Iraq

The United States military said Tuesday that a leader of a Sunni insurgent group had been arrested last month during a joint Iraqi-American operation. The man, Fakri Hadi Gari, was among 10 people arrested July 24 during raids in the northern city of Mosul, the U.S. military said in a statement.

Gari is suspected of organizing violent attacks carried out by the insurgent group Ansar al-Islam and of being in charge of its recruiting and financing operations, the statement said. Ansar al-Islam has roots in the country’s Kurdish region and has been blamed for suicide bombings throughout the country. He is also believed to have facilitated the movement of terrorists across the borders of Iraq.

Afghan Insurgents Cross-Dress To Escape U.S. Marines

I know... I know... I put up a lot today, but my friend in San Diego sent me a link to this and it had to go up. Otherwise I lose impact. Check it out!

Implications for officers/analysts:

  • It was bound to happen.
  • If it happened there it can happen anywhere.
  • It may be the start of a trend.
  • Look that second longer to make sure.
  • Do NOT over-react to this! Instead, laugh out loud.
