Three Charged With Million Pound Drug Seizure

The three men arrested, aged 53, 50 and 18 have now been charged with conspiracy to supply Class B drugs and possessing drugs with the intent to supply. They have also been charged with possessing a firearm and possessing ammunition after a weapon was recovered from an address in the Holmewood area of Bradford. All three are due to appear before Wakefield Magistrates. The Regional Roads Crime Team supported by Wakefield District Police seized a significant amount of Class B drugs estimated to be worth more than a million pounds during a patrol at a lorry (truck) park. Three men were arrested at Ferrybridge, West Yorkshire, on suspicion of possession of a Class B drug with intent to supply and are currently being questioned at Wakefield Police Station. Enquiries are ongoing.

Head of the Regional Roads Crime Team, Detective Chief Inspector Richard James, said: “This is an excellent example of us working together with local police to disrupt suspected criminals who cross borders to commit crime.” The Regional Roads Policing Team is the first operational team created by joint collaboration with officers and staff seconded from each of the four police forces of Yorkshire and the Humber. The team was set up in July 2008 with a clear strategic vision to create a hostile environment for criminals that use the road network and cause significant disruption to their illegal business enterprises, from burglary, to drugs, to high value vehicle theft, to people trafficking. It is committed to supplying additional capability to the four police forces of the region wherever needed across the whole of Yorkshire and the Humber.

Parents trap Facebook predator

A British couple posing as their young daughter on Facebook have trapped a man who was grooming the girl for sex. Thomas Gibbs, 52, was arrested after the 11-year-old's parents handed evidence of their online exchanges to police, and then arranged to meet him in public, at which point he was arrested. Gibbs was jailed yesterday for 16 months after admitting in Oxford Crown Court to meeting a child following sexual grooming, the Daily Mail said.

The court heard how the girl's parents had noticed their daughter chatting on Facebook in the family living room. The mother took over the laptop and and saw Gibbs had commented on the girl's profile picture, saying he wanted to kiss her. He also wrote: "I really like you" and "I want to meet you". After notifying police, the woman and her husband continued to chat online with Gibbs for a week, posing as their daughter.

Murder rate in England at its lowest in 20 years

Alan Travis, Home Affairs editor

Thursday 16 July 2009

Number of killings drops 17% in England and Wales as Home Office reports overall crime is stable despite recession.

The murder rate in England and Wales has fallen to its lowest in 20 years, with 648 homicides recorded in 2008/09 – 136 fewer than the year before.

The annual crime figures published today appear to show that the economic recession has had a limited impact, with a lower than expected 1% increase in domestic burglary.

The overall crime rate in England and Wales is officially declared to have been stable in the past year with an estimated 10.7m offences, according to the British Crime Survey (BCS). The separate measure of police-recorded crime said the rate fell by 5% last year.
