Indonesian police said they have arrested an Indonesian who is suspected of obtaining overseas funding for last month's bomb attack on two hotels in Jakarta, which killed nine people, including Australians.Mohamad Jibril "was suspected of having a role in the overseas funding", police spokesman Nanan Soekarna told reporters."From who and how, we are still investigating."Security expert Sidney Jones told Reuters Jibril had studied in Pakistan and was a member of a group previously linked to Al Qaeda. He ran the radical magazine Jihadmagz in Indonesia.
Malaysian-born militant Noordin Mohammad Top, who heads a more violent splinter group of the Jemaah Islamiah militant network, is widely thought to have been behind the attacks on the JW Marriott and Ritz Carlton hotels.Since the bombings, police have arrested at least six people, including Jibril, and three others died during raids. But initial reports they had killed Top during a raid in Central Java proved to be incorrect.
Police are trying to pin down whether the attackers received overseas funding from Al Qaeda.Last week, police said they had arrested a Saudi national suspected of involvement in the fundings of the recent attacks.Media reports quoting police sources said authorities believed couriers may have brought funds for last month's hotel into Indonesia from the Middle East.
Police are investigating whether last month's terrorist attacks on the JW Marriott and Ritz-Carlton hotels in Jakarta were financed from overseas sources, following the arrest of a man believed to be a Saudi national in connection with the suicide bombings.
Authorities arrested two new suspects recently in west Java, a province on Indonesia's main island, said Nanan Sukarna, a police spokesman. One of the suspects, identified as Ali, is believed to be a Saudi national and another, Iwan, is an Indonesian. The arrests come after police detained five people and killed three others -- including the alleged "field commander" of the hotel attacks -- in two separate raids this month. Indonesian police have made leaflets picturing four men sought in connection with the July 17 attacks on two Jakarta hotels.
Indonesian police have stopped short of naming al Qaeda as a possible source of funds for the hotel attacks, which killed nine people including the two suicide bombers. But Mr. Nanan said the police were probing the role of the new suspects in arranging funds from another country.
Jemaah Islamiyah, the Southeast Asian terrorism network blamed for a string of attacks in Indonesia, has in the past received funding and training from al Qaeda operatives, including for the 2002 Bali nightclub bombs that killed 202 people, mainly Western tourists. Mexican authorities on Saturday arrested four men in connection with last week's shooting death of a U.S. Border Patrol agent in San Diego County, California, Mexico's state-run news agency Notimex reported.
Border Patrol Agent Robert Rosas was shot and killed Thursday night while responding to a potential incursion into the United States in the Campo area in San Diego County, U.S. authorities said.
Mexican federal police identified the men as human smugglers, and said they were in the act of transporting 21 immigrants when they were detained in the northwest state of Baja California, Notimex said.
At a news conference, federal police identified two of the suspects as brothers Jose Eugenio Quintero Ruiz, 49, and Jose Evodio Quintero Ruiz, 43. The other two arrestees were taxi drivers Antonio Badallares Zepeda, 57 and Jose Alfredo Camacho Penuela, 34, Notimex reported.
